Writer/Editor, City Cast Chicago

City Cast is hiring a Writer/Editor to be the signature voice of its daily Chicago newsletter, which will launch in early 2021 along with a daily podcast. In this role, you’ll avidly follow local news and culture, then write and curate stories, headlines and other tidbits into an irresistible M-F email. You’ll also help choose and book podcast guests and run City Cast Chicago’s social accounts.

Who are you?

You’re a writer with verve who has excellent instincts for what matters most to Chicago, and you want to make your community better through journalism.

Key Responsibilities

  • Work with City Cast colleagues to decide on the most compelling stories and updates to go into the day’s Chicago newsletter. Write killer subject headings, and demonstrate excellent discretion for what Chicagoans need to know, and what should be left out.
  • In collaboration with your City Cast colleagues, develop a workflow and production schedule for the daily newsletter that syncs with the podcast’s production demands.
  • Write the Chicago newsletter, ensuring it’s published at a regular time and with a consistent and compelling voice.
  • Consume numerous sources of local news, culture, and information daily and identify the compelling tidbits to be shared with Chicago readers.
  • Gather visual content for daily newsletter, ensuring that appropriate licensing guidelines are followed, and that images are high quality and editorially compelling.
  • Engage with newsletter readers by responding to their emails and social media and devising newsletter features that delight them.

  • 3+ years’ experience writing and/or editing professionally, ideally in a deadline-driven environment.
  • Voracious Chicago news diet, with a talent for identifying compelling and newsy content from a wide variety of sources.
  • Excellent writing and editing skills. You also write great headlines.
  • Reliable news judgment about the complicated issues facing Chicago.
  • Experience writing for social media, and building virtual community around news content.
  • Excitement about working at a startup, and enthusiasm for City Cast’s mission of informing and engaging Chicago.
